Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some frequently asked questions that will help you get ready for your endoscopic procedure.

What should I bring with me to my procedure?

On the day of your procedure, please bring a list of the following:

  • Current medications
  • Allergies
  • Any past hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Copy of your advance directive

Do I take my blood pressure or heart medications on the day of the procedure?

You may take your prescribed medications with a small sip of water–unless instructed otherwise by your physician’s office.

How should I dress on the day of my endoscopy?

We recommend you dress in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Wear a two-piece outfit with a short-sleeved shirt. You may want to bring a sweater or light jacket along with you. Wear comfortable and supportive footwear. Avoid heels or flip-flops. Many patients find it most comfortable to wear or bring socks. Do not wear bulky jewelry.

May I wear perfume or lotion during my procedure?

No. For the comfort and safety of our patients, Jackson Siegelbaum’s Endoscopy Center is a fragrance-free facility. You and your driver should not wear perfumes, scented lotions or oils the day of your procedure.

May I use chewing gum, hard candy or chewing tobacco on my procedure day?

No. These items are not permitted in the 5 hours prior to a sedated procedure. They have the ability to increase saliva and gastric secretions. Serious medical complications are associated with patients who do not have an empty stomach. The use of these items will cause a delay or cancellation of your procedure.

Do I need to arrive early for my procedure?

You will be contacted by your physician’s office at least 24 hours in advance to confirm your procedure and arrival time. There is no need to arrive prior to your scheduled time. Your scheduled arrival time allows for the completion of consent forms and a medical information review. Occasionally, fluctuations in the schedule occur and you may be requested to arrive earlier or later than originally scheduled.

May I drive myself home after my endoscopy procedure?

No. If you are receiving sedation during your procedure, you may not drive for 12 hours after the procedure—you must have a driver to transport you home.

For appointments scheduled after 1:30 pm, we request your driver wait for you in our waiting room.

After my procedure, will I be able to return to work or school?

Returning to work or school after a sedated procedure is not recommended. Activities should be limited. Operating a motor vehicle or power equipment is not permitted for 12 hours following the procedure. Most individuals are able to resume normal activities the following day.

Discharge instructions will be provided to you. Please read and follow them carefully.

May I bring someone back with me before the procedure?

No. Due to HIPAA privacy requirements, only patients are allowed in the procedure area.

How long does the endoscopic procedure take?

You should plan to be at our facility for 2 to 2.5 hours due to the pre- and post-procedure process, as well as any unforeseen schedule fluctuations.

However, the actual endoscopic procedure is much shorter. On average, a colonoscopy takes approximately 20 minutes and the average EGD takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

What if I have my menstrual cycle during my endoscopy?

Your menstrual cycle will not affect your procedure. Use your preferred feminine products as normal.

What type of anesthesia do you use and will it make me sick?

We use short-acting, intravenous (IV) anesthetic called propofol. Propofol is commonly used for short procedures because of its ability to produce loss of awareness with very few side effects. It has a shorter recovery period compared to other anesthetic agents and it has anti-nausea properties so there is a very low chance of nausea.

What should I do if I need to cancel my procedure?

If it is the day of your endoscopic procedure and you need to cancel, please contact the Endoscopy Center at 717-975-2430 immediately to inform us. You will be instructed to call your physician’s office to reschedule.

If it is before your scheduled procedure date and you need to cancel, please call our main office at 717-761-0930 to reschedule.

Can I take an Uber, Lyft or taxi home after my procedure?

Unfortunately, no. The Pennsylvania Department of Health does not permit ride sharing services to be used by patients recovering from anesthesia.
