Esophageal Varices

Banding of Varices

Physicians are now able to treat varices so they will not bleed. Drugs are often used to reduce the pressure in the veins. Injection with sclerosing agents is another technique. In this picture, a third method is used. Small rubber bands are placed over the varix thereby squeezing them shut and eventually obliterating them. In this image, the varix now appears as a small dark blue marble in the lower esophagus, a typical appearance after a band has been placed at its base.
